From my research, the quote was believed to be originated from either from Dutch, French or Italian. In French, it goes as "Pas de rose sans épine" while in Italian; "Non c'è rosa senza spine."
Basically, what I understood about this quote is that love is like a rose with thorns. It has obstacles that one might or must face in order to gain that love. In other words, love can put you in dangerous situations.
